I am back!!! And it’s a new year as well. 2016, wow how time flies eh? Anyways, during this week of Auxano we read the book Life Together by Dietrich Bonheffer. This book is simply amazing; it was quite a challenge reading this book mainly because it is written in old English and it was translated from German to English way back when. Anyways, mid-week we got challenged I can say by our teacher the awesome Andy Renton. It’s always a good time when he teaches us. Anyways, in Chapter 4 of the book, it talks about different kind of ministries, as in for example. “The Ministry Of Listening”, which is the one that I chose to do for this challenge.
First off I’m going to leave you with a quote by Winston Churchill.
The reason why I chose this quote is because it is true, it does take courage and self-control to speak up when needed to but also to sit down and listen when needed to be. James 1:19 says, “My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry.”
In the book Bonheffer said, “The first service that one owes to others in the fellowship consists in listening to them. Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them.”- Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Learning how to listen to our brothers and sisters or basically anyone can be hard to do. We are humans after all, sometimes we just brush people off and not listen to what they have to say. Sometimes we can be like that to God as well. We get that it can be hard for others to listen carefully. However, there are a lot of people in this world that just want someone to listen to them, just to be there for them. That right there can be a valuable thing, a good skill to have, and honestly, it is a good feeling to when someone listens to you. I personally, like it when someone is just there for me just to listen to what I have to say. But sometimes you got to be careful as well, don’t be foolish before you respond. “To answer before listening is foolish and shameful.”- Proverbs 8:13. We ought to figure out the perfect balance between when to speak up and when to just listen. That can be hard as well, but with God we know that all things are possible. Right?
Another thing that stood out for me in this section is that we sometimes don’t give enough to God who gives us the patience and self-control to be quiet and just listen. Bonheffer said,” But Christians have forgotten that the ministry of listening has been committed to them by Him who is Himself the great listener and whose work they should share. We should listen with the ears of God that we may speak the Word of God.”- Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Like really, if we one day just at random stop listening to God and go our own way, then we will be forever lost. Proverbs 19:27 NIRV says this, “My son, if you stop listening to what I teach you, you will wander away from the words of knowledge.” God has given us the patience to listen to others. Even though that can be a hard task to do, we ought to do that for our brothers or sisters or basically anyone. Just you… Yes you right there, just you being there to listen to someone can help them out a lot. God listens to us all the time even when we don’t think He is… think again because He does listen to us too. God is the best listener overall. But if we ought to be like Him we got to learn how to do this too.
